London born, Johnny?s first job in show business was as a dancer in a touring show, then, aged 18, Jack Hylton employed him as a comedian. Following R.A.F. service in World War 2, Johnny established himself in variety, panto, radio and television, including an appearance in the Royal Variety Show at the London Palladium in 1949.

A 10 week run with the Tivoli Theatre Circuit took him to Australia in 1957, and he remained there for five years. He then played Fagin in OLIVER at the New Theatre in London, performed in Las Vegas, then returned to Australia where he became a star in television.

Shows he appeared in included SUNNY SIDE UP, THE MAVIS BRANSTON SHOW and, notably, as Aldo Godolfus in NUMBER 96, until his character was killed off in 1975.

During the 1980s and 90s he made many guest appearances in numerous T.V. shows, including NEIGHBOURS. Films included MOULIN ROUGE and THE POTATO FACTORY.

His daughter, Joanna Lockwood, is an established actress who had a long running television role in the show COP SHOP.
