Born in Bootle, Liverpool, he initially worked as a schoolteacher before turning to comedy, building a strong reputation on the UK club circuit. His success led to television, where he gained national recognition through
The Tom O’Connor Show on the BBC, establishing him as a popular light entertainment performer.

He became widely known as a quiz and game show host, fronting programmes including
Crosswits, Name That Tune, Pick Pockets, and Password. His approachable manner and quick wit made him a natural presenter, and he remained a familiar face on British television for many years.

Alongside his presenting work, O’Connor continued to perform as a comedian and entertainer, appearing regularly in theatre, summer seasons, and pantomime. He also took on acting roles in television and on stage, maintaining a broad presence within the industry.
