Roger Rees (Water Rat No. 863)

Roger Rees (5 May 1944 – 10 July 2015) was a Welsh actor and director, known for his work across stage, film, and television. Born in Aberystwyth, Wales, he trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) before beginning a distinguished career in theatre.

He became widely recognised for his portrayal of Nicholas Nickleby in the Royal Shakespeare Company’s stage adaptation of
The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby, a performance which transferred to both the West End and Broadway and earned him a Tony Award for Best Actor.

Rees built an extensive stage career, working with leading theatre companies including the Royal Shakespeare Company, and appeared in a wide range of classical and contemporary productions. His work extended internationally, particularly in the United States, where he continued to perform on Broadway and direct theatre.

Alongside his stage work, he appeared in film and television, with roles including Sheriff of Nottingham in
Robin Hood: Men in Tights, and recurring appearances in series such as The West Wing and Cheers. His screen work complemented a career that remained firmly rooted in theatre.

Roger Rees died on 10 July 2015 at the age of 71. His contributions to acting and directing across multiple media secured his reputation as a respected and versatile performer.
