Paul James (PJ the DJ)
Paul James, affectionately known to generations of listeners and audiences as "PJ the DJ", was a much-loved entertainer, comedian, musician, broadcaster and compère whose career spanned several decades.

A familiar figure throughout Kent and beyond, Paul built a reputation as a natural entertainer with an infectious personality, quick wit and a genuine ability to connect with people from all walks of life. Whether performing on stage, hosting events or broadcasting on the radio, he became known for his warmth, humour and professionalism.

Paul enjoyed a varied career within the entertainment industry, working as a comedian, musician and presenter. Many listeners came to know him through his broadcasting work, particularly with BBC Radio Kent, where he became one of the station's most recognisable personalities. His distinctive style and passion for entertainment earned him a loyal following across Kent and the wider South East.

Away from broadcasting, Paul remained deeply involved in live entertainment and charity work. He was a popular compère and after-dinner speaker, regularly lending his talents to community events, charitable causes and industry functions. His enthusiasm for show business and his dedication to helping others made him a respected and well-loved figure among colleagues and audiences alike.

An unusual chapter of Paul's life was his connection to Brian Epstein, a role that led to him being affectionately described as "The Fifth Beatle's Dogsbody". The association became part of the rich collection of stories and experiences that made Paul such an engaging personality both on and off stage.

Paul James passed away in 2019 at the age of 72. He is remembered not only for his contributions to broadcasting and entertainment, but also for his generosity, friendship and ability to bring people together through laughter and music.

Paul was a valued member of the Grand Order of Water Rats. His lifelong dedication to entertainment, charity and fellowship embodied the spirit of the Order, and he remains fondly remembered by fellow Water Rats and friends throughout the industry.
