Kyran Jesson is a British entertainment producer and former holiday resort entertainment director whose career has included large-scale live entertainment, theatrical production and family spectaculars in both the UK and internationally.
Born in August 1957, Kyran built a career on the production and management side of the entertainment industry, becoming closely associated with the large-scale family entertainment and holiday resort sector.
One of the most significant chapters of his career was his association with Butlin’s.
By the late 1980s Kyran was working at a senior level within the organisation. Contemporary archive material records him as director of the Wonderwest World complex at Ayr in 1988, during a major redevelopment of the resort. He would also later be described as a former resort director at Butlin’s Minehead.
His connection with Butlin’s places him within an important tradition of British popular entertainment. For generations, the holiday camps provided employment for thousands of singers, comedians, musicians, dancers and speciality acts, while also giving many young entertainers their first experience of working professionally in front of a live audience.
Kyran’s role was on the other side of the curtain, helping to create, manage and develop the entertainment presented to those audiences.
By 1998 he was identified nationally as Butlin’s Director of Entertainment, at a time when the company was continuing to reshape its entertainment offer for a changing family audience.
His career later expanded into independent theatrical and event production.
One particularly notable international production was Spider-Man Live! A Stunt Spectacular, a large-scale touring arena production based on the Marvel character.
Launched in the United States in 2002, the production combined theatre, stunt work and live-action spectacle, presenting Spider-Man and other characters from the Marvel universe in an arena setting. Kyran Jesson is credited as one of the show's producers alongside Jeffrey Chrzczon and A. C. Lichtenstein.
The production toured American cities during 2002 and 2003 and represented the kind of technically ambitious family entertainment that became an increasingly important part of live touring during this period.
Kyran also remained involved in theatrical and event businesses in Britain. Companies House records show his directorship of companies including Grapevine Theatrical Productions Limited, Quantum Events London Limited and QEL Events Limited, reflecting his continuing involvement in live production and performing arts support.
His career therefore represents a particularly important side of the entertainment profession.
While audiences naturally remember the stars who walk onto the stage, every successful production depends upon the producers, entertainment directors and organisers behind them. They find the acts, develop the shows, manage the enormous practical challenges of live entertainment and ultimately create the opportunities in which performers can work.
That contribution was recognised through Kyran’s membership of the Grand Order of Water Rats.
His membership continues a long Water Rats tradition of recognising not only performers but also the producers, impresarios, agents and entertainment professionals whose work behind the scenes has helped sustain British showbusiness.
From the great British holiday resort tradition of Butlin’s to international arena spectaculars, Kyran Jesson’s career has been spent helping create entertainment for live audiences.
Water Rat No. 840, Kyran Jesson represents the people behind the curtain whose creativity, organisation and understanding of audiences allow the entertainment industry to exist in the first place.
