Sir Ken Dodd OBE
Sir Ken Dodd was one of Britain's most beloved comedians, renowned for his extraordinary longevity, boundless energy and unique style of stand-up comedy. Born George Edward Kenneth Dodd in Knotty Ash, Liverpool, on 8 November 1927, he became one of the most successful and enduring entertainers in British showbusiness history.

Dodd began performing professionally in the 1950s and quickly developed a reputation for his rapid-fire delivery, cheerful optimism and ability to keep audiences laughing for hours. His performances became legendary for their length, often continuing well beyond midnight, earning him a devoted following across the United Kingdom.

Throughout his career, Ken became synonymous with his trademark "tickling stick" and the Diddy Men, characters that became familiar to generations of theatre-goers and television audiences. His distinctive appearance, wild hair and infectious laugh made him instantly recognisable.

Alongside his success as a live performer, Dodd enjoyed a prolific recording career. His 1965 recording of
Tearsbecame one of the best-selling singles in British chart history, selling millions of copies and demonstrating his ability to move audiences as both a comedian and singer.

Television brought him further fame through numerous variety shows, guest appearances and specials. However, despite his success on screen, he always considered live performance his true passion and continued touring theatres throughout his life.

His contribution to entertainment was recognised with numerous honours. He was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 1982 and received a knighthood in 2017 for services to entertainment and charity.

Across a career spanning more than six decades, Sir Ken Dodd became one of Britain's most respected performers, admired not only for his comic genius but also for his professionalism, generosity and dedication to his audiences.

Sir Ken Dodd passed away on 11 March 2018 at the age of 90, just days after marrying his lifelong partner, Lady Anne Dodd. His legacy continues through the countless performers he inspired and the millions of people whose lives he brightened through laughter.

Widely respected throughout the entertainment industry, he embodied the values of friendship, charity and fellowship that lie at the heart of the Order, and remains one of the most cherished figures in Water Rats history.
