Alvin Stardust (27 September 1942 – 23 October 2014), born Bernard William Jewry in Muswell Hill, London, was an English pop singer and actor whose career spanned over five decades across music, television, and theatre.
He first found success in the early 1960s under the name Shane Fenton, stepping in as lead singer of Shane Fenton and the Fentones following the death of the group’s original frontman. With the band, he achieved chart success with singles including I’m a Moody Guy, establishing himself as a recognisable figure in the British pop scene of the time.
After a period away from mainstream success, he returned in the early 1970s as Alvin Stardust, adopting a distinctive, leather-clad image that aligned with the glam rock movement. This reinvention proved highly successful, with My Coo Ca Choo reaching No. 2 in the UK Singles Chart, followed by further hits including Jealous Mind (which reached No. 1), Red Dress, and You You You. His sound blended rock and roll influences with contemporary pop production, while his stage persona became one of his defining features.
Throughout the late 1970s and 1980s, Stardust continued to record and perform, maintaining a presence in the charts and on television. He remained active in live entertainment, touring extensively and appearing on a variety of programmes. Alongside his music career, he also developed work in theatre, including stage roles in musicals and dramatic productions, demonstrating his versatility as a performer.
In later years, he continued to perform live and record new material, sustaining a loyal audience. His final album, Running Through My Mind, was released shortly after his death.
Alvin Stardust died on 23 October 2014 at the age of 72. His career, marked by reinvention and longevity, secured his place as a distinctive and enduring figure in British popular music.
